Fibroids and fertility: can uterine fibroids affect pregnancy? This is a common question many women ask when they’ve been diagnosed with fibroids while trying to conceive or during pregnancy. At Ovation Obstetrics & Gynecology in Frisco, TX, we believe it’s important to understand the relationship between fibroids and reproductive health. While fibroids are typically noncancerous growths in the uterus, their size and location can influence fertility and pregnancy outcomes.

What Are Uterine Fibroids?

Uterine fibroids, also called leiomyomas, are muscular growths that develop in the uterine wall. They vary in size—from as small as a pea to as large as a melon—and may appear as a single fibroid or multiple fibroids. While many women with fibroids experience no symptoms, others may face heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, or pressure.

How Do Fibroids Affect Fertility?

Not all fibroids interfere with fertility. However, when they do, it’s often because of their location:

  • Submucosal fibroids, which grow into the uterine cavity, can disrupt the implantation of an embryo.
  • Intramural fibroids, which grow within the uterine wall, may distort the shape of the uterus or block the fallopian tubes.
  • Large fibroids can affect the blood flow to the uterine lining, making it harder for an embryo to implant and grow.

Fibroids can also cause complications with IVF (in vitro fertilization) by reducing implantation rates or increasing the risk of miscarriage.

Can You Get Pregnant with Fibroids?
Yes, many women with fibroids get pregnant and deliver healthy babies. However, depending on the type, size, and location of the fibroids, your OB/GYN may recommend monitoring or treatment before trying to conceive. In some cases, surgical removal (myomectomy) is recommended to improve fertility outcomes.

Do Fibroids Affect Pregnancy?

During pregnancy, fibroids can sometimes grow due to increased estrogen levels. This can lead to:

  • Pain or discomfort from fibroid growth
  • Increased risk of miscarriage, especially in the first trimester
  • Preterm labor or delivery
  • Breech position or other fetal position issues
  • Cesarean delivery if the fibroid blocks the birth canal

That said, many women with fibroids have uneventful pregnancies with appropriate prenatal care.
