C-Section recovery and caring for your scar is an important topic for many new parents. At Ovation Obstetrics & Gynecology in Frisco, TX, we know that recovering from a cesarean delivery is different for everyone—but there are practical ways to support your healing and reduce discomfort during the process.
Whether your C-section was planned or unexpected, your recovery will involve physical and emotional healing. Below are helpful tips to guide you through the process and care for your scar.
- Rest and move when you can
It’s important to rest as much as possible in the early weeks after surgery, but gentle movement—like walking around the house—can help improve circulation, prevent blood clots, and ease gas pains. Avoid heavy lifting and anything that strains your abdomen until your provider says it’s safe. - Manage your pain wisely
Pain around your incision site is normal. Your provider may recommend over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Ice packs and a supportive abdominal binder can also help ease discomfort. Always follow your provider’s instructions, especially if you’re breastfeeding. - Take care of your incision
Your incision needs to stay clean and dry to reduce the risk of infection. You can gently clean the area with mild soap and water in the shower—no scrubbing needed. Pat the area dry and wear loose, breathable clothing to prevent irritation. Avoid baths, swimming, or hot tubs until your incision is fully healed. - Watch for signs of infection
Call your provider if you notice any of the following:
- Increased redness, swelling, or warmth around the incision
- Pus or foul-smelling discharge
- Fever over 100.4°F
- Severe or increasing pain
Prompt care can help prevent complications.
- Support your scar healing
Once your provider confirms your incision is healed (usually after 6 weeks), you can gently massage the scar with an unscented lotion or vitamin E oil. This may improve flexibility and reduce scar tissue buildup. - Eat well and stay hydrated
A healthy diet supports your body’s healing process. Focus on lean protein, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and plenty of water. If you’re breastfeeding, staying hydrated is especially important. - Take care of your emotional well-being
Healing after a C-section is not just physical. If you feel overwhelmed, anxious, or sad, talk to your provider. Postpartum mental health support is available, and you’re not alone. - Attend your postpartum appointments
Your follow-up appointments allow your provider to check your healing, remove stitches if needed, and answer any questions. This is also a great time to discuss birth control, postpartum recovery, and your overall health.
At Ovation Obstetrics & Gynecology in Frisco, TX, we’re here to support you at every step of your recovery. Whether you need help managing discomfort, caring for your scar, or navigating life with a new baby, our team is ready to help.
