June is Pride Month: a time to celebrate identity, community, and the ongoing journey toward equality in all areas of life, including healthcare. At Ovation OB/GYN, we believe every person deserves compassionate, knowledgeable, and affirming medical care, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. This Pride Month, we want to open a conversation about the unique gynecologic and reproductive health needs of LGBTQ+ patients and why finding a provider who truly sees you makes all the difference.

Why LGBTQ+-Affirming OB/GYN Care Matters

Research consistently shows that LGBTQ+ individuals face significant barriers to healthcare, including discrimination, lack of provider knowledge, and fear of judgment. These barriers can lead to delayed or skipped care, which can have real consequences for long-term health. Cervical cancer screenings, STI testing, hormone management, contraceptive counseling, and fertility support are all areas where LGBTQ+ patients may have specific needs that differ from the “default” assumptions many providers make.

The truth is: gynecologic health is relevant to anyone with a uterus, cervix, or ovaries, regardless of how they identify or who they love. And everyone deserves a provider who understands that.

“Celynne was very kind, attentive, and answered all of my questions! She took adequate time to ensure she understood my concerns and made sure I got the info I needed.”

Routine Screenings Still Matter

One common misconception among lesbian and bisexual women is that they don’t need regular Pap smears or HPV testing because they aren’t sexually active with men. In reality, HPV: the virus responsible for most cervical cancers can be transmitted between women through skin-to-skin genital contact. Current guidelines recommend that all individuals with a cervix begin cervical cancer screening at age 21, regardless of sexual orientation or history.

The same goes for breast exams, STI screenings, and annual wellness visits. These preventive care appointments exist to catch problems early, when they’re most treatable. Skipping them based on assumptions about who “needs” them can create gaps in care that matter.

Trans and Non-Binary Patients: You Belong Here

Transgender men and non-binary individuals who have female reproductive anatomy may still benefit from gynecologic care, including Pap smears, pelvic exams, and management of menstruation or menopause symptoms. Testosterone therapy can affect the vaginal tissues and cervical cells, which is why regular screenings and open communication with your provider are especially important.

We understand that visiting an OB/GYN can feel uncomfortable or dysphoria-inducing for some trans and non-binary patients. At Ovation OB/GYN, our goal is to make care as comfortable as possible. We encourage open dialogue about your preferences, whether that involves terminology, exam modifications, or simply knowing what to expect before your visit.

Navigating Fertility and Family Planning

LGBTQ+ individuals and couples often face unique considerations when thinking about starting or growing a family. From intrauterine insemination (IUI) and donor sperm options to conversations about egg freezing and gestational carriers, family planning for the LGBTQ+ community involves pathways that may require specialized guidance.

We welcome these conversations at Ovation OB/GYN. Whether you’re just beginning to explore your options or are ready to take concrete next steps, our providers are here to offer accurate, judgment-free information and support.

What to Look for in an Affirming Provider

Finding an OB/GYN who is genuinely affirming, not just tolerant, can take some effort. Here are a few things to look for: inclusive intake forms that ask for preferred name and pronouns; staff who use your correct name and pronouns consistently; a provider who asks open-ended questions rather than making assumptions about your relationships or body; and an office culture that treats every patient with equal dignity and respect.

If you’ve had negative experiences with healthcare providers in the past, we hear you and we’re committed to doing better. At Ovation OB/GYN, we care for patients from all walks of life. That’s not just a tagline; it’s the foundation of how we practice medicine.

“Dr. Vu is a wonderful doctor; she is very kind and caring. She explains things clearly and is checking to make sure that I don’t have cancer of the ovaries since I have had breast cancer in the past.”
