By: Ovation Obstetrics & Gynecology:

For many women, heavy menstrual bleeding — also called menorrhagia — can disrupt daily life, sap energy, and lead to anemia or pain. If traditional treatments like medication haven’t helped, NovaSure endometrial ablation may be a viable alternative that significantly reduces or eliminates heavy bleeding. At Ovation OB/GYN, we’re committed to helping patients understand their options — including what NovaSure is, how it works, who it’s for, and what to expect before, during, and after the procedure.

What Is NovaSure Endometrial Ablation?

NovaSure endometrial ablation is a minimally invasive procedure that treats heavy menstrual bleeding by removing (ablating) the lining of the uterus — the endometrium, which is the tissue responsible for monthly bleeding. Unlike a hysterectomy, which removes the uterus entirely, NovaSure gently destroys the lining inside the uterus without incisions or major surgery.

The procedure typically takes about five minutes and can be performed in a clinic or physician’s office. Most patients can go home the same day and return to normal activities quickly.

Who Is a Good Candidate for NovaSure?

NovaSure is not for everyone, but it’s an excellent option for many women dealing with heavy menstrual bleeding. Ideal candidates typically:

  • Have completed childbearing — future pregnancy after ablation can be dangerous and is not recommended.
  • Experience heavy bleeding that interferes with daily life, lasts more than seven days, or soaks through pads or tampons quickly.
  • Have not had success with medications or other bleeding management strategies.
  • Do not have conditions like uterine cancer, active pelvic infection, or an IUD in place.

NovaSure is not a form of birth control, and pregnancy after the procedure is strongly discouraged. If pregnancy is possible, effective contraception should be used.

How the NovaSure Procedure Works

NovaSure uses radiofrequency energy to remove the endometrial lining. Here’s what typically happens:

  1. Preparation: A clinician may provide a local anesthetic to minimize discomfort.
  2. Insertion: A thin device is gently inserted through the cervix into the uterus.
  3. Expansion: A triangular mesh expands to fit the shape of the uterine cavity.
  4. Energy Delivery: Controlled radiofrequency energy is delivered through the mesh, destroying the endometrial tissue.
  5. Completion: The mesh is retracted and the device removed — usually within five minutes.

Because the procedure is quick and doesn’t require incisions, recovery tends to be fast. Most patients can return to daily activities within a day or two.

Benefits of NovaSure Endometrial Ablation

NovaSure offers several advantages that make it a compelling choice for many women:

  • Minimal Invasiveness: No surgical cuts or prolonged hospitalization.
  • Quick Procedure: Usually completed in under 10 minutes.
  • High Satisfaction: Many women report a significant reduction in bleeding and related symptoms like fatigue and anemia.
  • Effective for Many: A high percentage of patients experience lighter periods or no periods at all after treatment.
  • Symptom Relief: In addition to reducing bleeding, some women also notice improvements in cramping and premenstrual symptoms.

What to Expect After the Procedure

Initial recovery may include:

  • Mild cramping or pelvic discomfort
  • Light bleeding or spotting
  • Vaginal discharge as the uterus heals

Most symptoms are temporary and manageable with rest and over-the-counter pain relief as recommended by your provider. While many women feel well within a day or two, it’s important to avoid strenuous activity and follow postoperative instructions from your OB/GYN.

Some discharge or spotting can last for a few weeks as the body adjusts to the treatment. It’s also worth noting that even if bleeding doesn’t stop entirely right away, improvements often continue over time as the uterus heals.

Risks and Considerations

As with any medical procedure, NovaSure carries some risks — though complications are uncommon. Potential risks include:

  • Uterine perforation (a rare puncture of the uterine wall)
  • Infection
  • Thermal injury to adjacent tissues
  • Rarely, incomplete treatment or persistent symptoms

Because the procedure destroys the uterine lining, it’s essential to confirm that heavy bleeding isn’t due to something more serious, like cancer. Your clinician will typically perform appropriate evaluations before recommending NovaSure.

Additionally, NovaSure does not guarantee complete elimination of periods for all women. Some still experience lighter bleeding or spotting after treatment.

Is NovaSure Right for You?

If heavy menstrual bleeding is affecting your quality of life — interfering with work, activities, or causing fatigue — NovaSure may be a good option to discuss with your OB/GYN. It’s important to weigh the benefits and potential risks and talk through your health goals with one of our providers at Ovation OB/GYN.

We can help you determine whether NovaSure fits your individual needs, explore other treatment options if necessary, and support you through every step of your care.
